As Europe struggles to find a way out of financial trouble in Greece, Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou has revamped his government as expected in response to the growing social protest against the austerity measures. The primary appointment is that of Evangelos Venizelos as the new finance minister, replacing George Papaconstantinou.
Mr. Venizelos, 54, who was also appointed deputy prime minister along with the current deputy prime minister Theodoros Pangalos, was previously minister of defense.To negotiate with the creditors of the country and to pass the austerity with the public, it becomes the new heavyweight of a government tightens when the number of secretaries of state has been reduced. Revenge for a man who had vainly sought the leadership of the Socialist Party against Mr. Papandreou in 2007. From the second city, Salonika in the north, the constitutional expert who made a part of his studies in France, had led the preparations for the Olympic Games in Greece 2004.
M. Papaconstantinou, architect of reforms and austerity plan for European support for Greece is the government, but goes for the Environment, a position less exposed. The departure of Mr. Papaconstantinou his position was expected.Appreciated abroad, he was criticized by the base of the Socialist Party elected to power for imposing austerity forced march to the Greeks in order to obtain the loan of 110 billion euros granted by the EU in May 2010 and the IMF to avoid bankruptcy in Greece.
The new foreign minister of the government is Stavros Lambrinidis, 49, who was the head of the Greek Socialist parliamentary group in the European parliament and is considered close to Mr. Papandreou.
Another close to Papandreou, Panos Beglitis, until Secretary of State for Defence, became defense minister. Two team members who flew last difficult reforms, the Health Minister Andreas Loverdos and the Secretary of Labor George Koutroumanis see their portfolio responsibilities grow.
Former professor of public health at the London School of Economics, Elias Mossialos is the new spokesman for the government. As against two other relatives of Mr. Papandreou, Tina Birbili so far for the Environment and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dimitris Droutsas, leaving the government.
These departures occur two days after large demonstrations against austerity in Athens, where the personnel policy was strongly booed. The austerity plan which must be passed before the end of the month provides additional savings of 28 billion euros by 2015, mostly through tax increases and a massive privatization.
The adoption of these measures is the sine qua non posed by donors, EU and IMF, to release a new financial assistance to countries, which is again on the verge of bankruptcy, a year after the first aid .A second package of EU aid, which could range from 60 to 100 billion according to sources, is under discussion between all European partners.
It must be part of the discussions planned Friday morning between German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Nicolas Sarkozy, who were to meet to try to reconcile the views of French and German on the case before the European Council next week Brussels.
